History of the Market
The Westfield Farmers Market is a community gem that began in 2007. The Market originally began at Park Square, or the "Green," in Westfield. After the Green was renovated, the Market moved to a temporary location, and then landed at the Episcopal Church of the Atonement in 2015, opening with 7 loyal vendors. The 2022 season will be the Market's 8th year at the Church, and we expect to open with approximately 30 vendors. The Market continues to thrive, and our customer base has grown to a 2021 average of 493 customers per each 5 hour market.
The Copper Beech Tree
The European Copper Beech tree on the property of the Episcopal Church of the Atonement, 36 Court St., has a long history in Westfield, and is an important downtown landmark for the local community. Estimated to be more than two centuries old, the tree was there before the Civil War; it was standing on this spot when the parish was founded in the home of a parishioner in 1863, and shaded the Bush Miller home which stood on this property and was purchased by the church in 1923. The beech tree was there when the current building opened for worship in 1953. It has provided shade for many church and public events, and has graced the lawn for the Church of the Atonement Strawberry Festival which has been held there many times during its more than 150 year tradition. It will be standing this year as this important community tradition continues once again on the church lawn.
This copper beech tree and its companion growing at the back of the church are among the oldest trees remaining in downtown Westfield. The tree provides beauty for all who travel through Westfield, shade for citizens walking to home, school, shopping or work, and is a focal point of the Westfield Farmers Market, where musicians play under its branches, families picnic, children dance, and the community gathers joyfully.
